 Third Hand is proud to announce the first series of bike repair classes this season. Learn how to maintain your bike; everything from the basics like patching a tube, to comprehensive repair like overhauling bearing systems. Preference will be given to volunteers/members, but classes are open to all. Classes are free (but donations are always appreciated of course!).
This is a great chance to improve your skills, and we offer a chance to practice them by volunteering during our open shops!
The series will be four classes. Series #1 will be alternating Mondays from 7pm-9pm Jan. 30, Feb. 13, Feb. 27, and March 12.

Third Hand is Moving...But Where? |

Third Hand is growing beyond what we ever imagined, and we are looking for a new space. If you are a realtor, know someone with property, or would like to help us fundraise, please think about volunteering on our Moving Committee. We are looking for grant writers, property hunters, benefit organizers, private donors, etc... We would love to stay in a local Columbus neigborhood and double the shop space we have now. We are looking for a building or warehouse with the following specs: -At least 5000 sq ft. -Under $100,000 -Garage bay ideally to bring in lots of bikes -Bathroom -Climate controlled (to be able to use in the winter) or ability to modify to be climate controlled We are not very picky about other details as our volunteer crew is ready to put in hard work to make the new shop perfect! One thing people are always wondering is how to get involved and start volunteering. Volunteering is a great way to earn $8 an hour equivalent in credits to buy parts and bikes at the shop, make new friends, learn about bikes, and help the community and make a huge difference locally. The best part? It's easy and fun! We foster a positive environment that encourages learning for people of all skill levels and backgrounds. Here are some things we always need help with: Volunteer Opportunities
- Mechanics (learn, and then teach others)
- Front of Shop Greeter/Information Coordinator/and Cashier
- Teach a workshop
- Staff a table at events
- Create merch (flyers, sticker, shirts, etc)
- Volunteer on a committee (IT, Shop Duties, Outreach, Financial, Membership)
- Help us restart our Youth Earn a Bike Program
- Run scrap and recycling
- Tidy up shop (ongoing and always needed)
- Organize a ride/party/or event
- Be a community liason for THBC (races, events, clubs, rides)
- Find and apply for funding
- Raise funds, organize benefits, or any other idea!
- Have a bike collection drive
- Run an open shop
- Create bike art (or any art) for the shop
- Create and post shop signs (parts signs, tool bins, safety, diagrams)
- Bring food to open shop (volunteers are hungry)! Or arrange to receive food donations from groceries or restaurants
So don't hesitate! The best way to get started is to stop by any open shop and take a tour. We also will sign off volunteer credit for internships, community service requirements, school credit, etc. We look forward to meeting you!
